This week Team "Wolfpack" discussed David Orr's "Love It or Lose It: The Coming of Biphilia to the class.
Cesar: "David Orr explains some chief factors that out modernizing culture has that impede with developing Biophilia. I think this relates mainly on how we are influenced by authoritative forces like family and government."
Vanessa: "Orr talks about our love of nature and the types of love there are through Biophilia, (the love of nature). The first type of love between nature and humans is Eros, which means love of beauty but also having a goal to possess eros. Philia is love between friends. The problem that Orr emphasizes is the fact that Eros is easily dominant over agape because our goal is to possess more than to give back to nature."
After the presentations, Team Wolfpack watched "A Sense of Place" narrated by Patrick Smith.
.
Joe: "I enjoyed the film on "Sense of Place" with the author Patrick Smith. I am a fan of his, I read "A Land Remembered" a few years ago and it got me more interested in my Florida roots. I felt the video showed a side of Florida that most people dont even know exists."
Katie: "This was an interesting movie to watch because it made me realize for much Florida has changed over the years. Key West use to have 7 people living on the island, as of July 2009, the population was 22,463. Florida did not use to have the highways and interstates that we all travel on everyday now, people use to drive down dirt roads and if they needed something to eat they would pull off to the side of the road and grab fruit from the nearby tree. Today we travel on freeways that interrupt the flow of the land and eat at fast food restaurants. "
